The Oregon-Davis Girls Basketball team is known for being successful on the court. The seniors won sectional and bi-county tournaments every year as well a the Indiana 1A state championship their freshman year.
This year they were also recognized for their commitment to the fight against cancer. During the entire season, every member of the team wore a special color of shoelaces in honor of a friend or family member battling cancer. Senior twin sisters Alivia and Samantha Sims wore yellow laces in memory of their grandmother who passed away a year ago from liver cancer. "I am playing in honor of my Grandma Goetz. She came to all my games since elementary school. She would always wish me good luck and tell me that I did a good job, even if I really didn't," said Samantha.
Team members also wore a green bracelet on their shoe for their team manager, Christina Rotering. Christina is a sophomore battling a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Sims talks about Christina: "My team thinks it's unfair she has to battle cancer. Christina is an unbelievable person, a real fighter who can get through anything that comes her way. She is an inspiration to us all." The team sold bracelets in their school colors, along with a green one for Christina. The green is the awareness color for Christina's cancer, just as pink is the color for breast cancer.
On January 12th, the Lady Cats and rival basketball team John Glenn Falcons "Battled for Cancer." During their game, the players wore pink headbands; after the game both teams auctioned their headbands along with a special game ball, raising over $600 that was donated to Coaches vs. Cancer.
